Chigiri Minka

Note: With the exception of the earthen wall material, the building’s components can be preserved and reused where they remain in suitable condition.

 

Chigiri Minka is approximately 70 years old. The structure includes several large keyaki (zelkova) posts, with most of the remaining posts made of hinoki cypress. The beams are pine.

 

Building Area and Floor Space

• First floor: 206.09 m² (62.3 tsubo / 2,218 sq ft)

• Second floor: 132.49 m² (40.07 tsubo / 1,426 sq ft)

• Total floor area: 338.58 m² (102.42 tsubo / 3,644 sq ft)

• Building area: 209.39 m² (63.3 tsubo / 2,253 sq ft)

 

Layout

The first floor includes six Japanese-style rooms, a living room, kitchen, entrance hall, work area, bathroom, washroom, toilet, corridors, and a wide veranda (hiro-en). Traditional features include a tokonoma alcove and spaces for Buddhist and Shinto altars.

The second floor contains several large rooms with existing thresholds and lintels. The drawings also indicate areas with ōkabe walls, in which the structural posts are concealed, and traditional saobuchi ceilings. In some areas, the positions of the columns and beams are estimated rather than confirmed.

 

The plans are drawn at a scale of 1:100 and document the building in its current condition as of March 31, 2026.
