The Kominka Collective brings reclaimed and reconstructed Japanese folk houses, cottages, studios, and traditional materials to the United States

Kominka: Japanese Folk Houses

The Kominka Collective has started a new project with Toda Komuten of Shinshiro Japan to bring reclaimed and restored Japanese kominka and traditional Japanese materials to the United States to give these beautiful houses and irreplaceable materials a second life and to provide opportunities for people outside of Japan to live with and enjoy traditional Japanese architecture.

Toda Komuten, a longtime advocate for folk house preservation and restoration in Japan, disassembles old Japanese folk houses which are in very good condition but are scheduled to be demolished and rebuilds them for use as homes, studios, home offices, and shops. They are passionate about maintaining the integrity of the Japanese aesthetic while using modern technology to ensure that reconstructed komika are comfortable, and energy-efficient spaces in which to live and work.

Each kominka is unique, and we help you find the size and style of kominka which best suits you and your lifestyle.​

 

After you have chosen a kominka, we take care of all aspects of ordering and shipping and provide personal support for the building and decorating process.

Kominka

& Kominka ADUs

  • Kominka Houses are 2,000 sq. ft. or less

  • Kominka ADU:s are 800 sq. ft. or less

  • Perfect for use as a home or guest cottage.

  • Beautiful Japanese kominka timber frame arrives ready to be assembled by skilled carpenters

  • Beams, posts, and joints are from the original kominka  

  • Can be ordered with reclaimed ceramic roof tiles, shoji screen windows, and other materials and furnishings from the original kominka

  • Planning permission is required 

  • Are built to meet or exceed U.S. safety and energy requirements

Kominka Studio (Preconstructed Kit)

  • Kominka Studios are 2oo   sq. ft. 

  • Perfect for use as a studio, home office, family room, or quiet space.

  • Beautiful Japanese timber frame construction

  • The studio - wood floor, finished plaster walls, door, windows, shoji screens, loft, raised tatami seating area. and roof materials - arrives as a kit ready to be assembled by a skilled carpenter.

  • Beams, posts, and joints are from kominka and other wood is a mix of reclaimed wood from kominka and Japanese cypress

  • Choice of traditional ceramic roof tiles or metal roof, or a combination of the two

  • Planning permission is not required in most areas

  • Meet or exceed U.S. safety and energy requirements

Traditional Materials

& Furnishings

  • Incorporate old beams, posts, ceramic roof tiles,  and other materials in modern structures

  • Add interest with reclaimed ranma, shoji screens, tansu, and other furnishings

  • Use reclaimed metal, stone, and ceramic materials to create beautiful accents inside and outside the structure
